22 Aug 08 - Hard work pays off for brothers in business
Brothers Steve and Graham Rogers have come a long way in the past three years. This week sees the launch of a new group structure and the official opening of their new purpose built office, warehouse and recycling facility in Estover – a far cry from their humble beginnings in business.
In November 2005 Rogers Decorators was formed after Steve and Graham decided to start their own decorating business with friends Darren Baker and James Jones from Steve’s garage at his home in Plymstock. A steady stream of customers kept the business ticking along until Steve and Graham won their first big contract with Marjons. “It was a really big break for us. I think they were impressed by our hunger and determination to win the contract and I know they were equally impressed by our ability to complete the work on time and on budget,” said Steve Rogers.
That level of determination and ability to deliver on tight timescales were the ingredients for further contract awards in Plymouth at the University of Plymouth ’s award winning Roland Levinsky Building , the Mercedes-Benz garage at Derriford, The National Marine Aquarium and Mount Gould Hospital .
“We were really pleased to be winning such prestigious contracts but we knew that we had to make some major business decisions if we wanted to service the work,” said Graham Rogers. “Thankfully we were able to call on some excellent advice from our suppliers including Keith Underhill and Roger Robinson of the Underhill Group who had experienced similar growth with their business; and Dave Ottley our bank manager who guided us on the finance side,” he explained.
With some major contracts and consultation on business plans under their belts the business was ready to move on to the next level. Staff numbers grew quickly to 13 and then came more good news in the shape of some big retail contracts working alongside major contractors such as HBG and Midas across the country. Their clients now include most of the UK ’s major supermarkets. As a result, retail forms a division in its own right within the newly formed Rogers Group.
“Things were moving quickly to say the least! We didn’t panic because we believed in our staff and our ability to deliver. Today, the Rogers Group has a good team of hard working staff, “said Graham.
Those staff now work on contracts across the country from their new 6000sq ft headquarters in at Forresters Business Park in Estover. The new base includes shower facilities and a conference room for staff comfort along with a unique recycling area which enables The Group to lead the way in the recycling of paints, paint pots and other associated materials.
On top of embracing green issues The Group supports local charities. The two committed charities are Independence South West, which works with local adults with physical and sensory disabilities, which receives no government funding, and Hamoaze House. “We strongly believe that business has a responsibility to support local charitable causes. As a Group, we will continue to support the people who work hard in these organisations because they are a very important part of the Plymouth community. More than that, we will advise other businesses to do whatever they can to support the charity sector locally,” concluded Steve.
Steve would like to give a special thanks to the tremendous support given from his wife and family without whose support the business would not be where it is today.
