KMS (Contract Building Services) Ltd has been awarded a £625,000 contract to redevelop and extend The Mustard Tree Macmillan Centre in Plymouth .
Construction Company KMS will be adding a significant extension to improve facilities offered at the drop-in centre situated at Derriford Hospital . The Mustard Tree is a haven for cancer patients and their carers that provides both information and support, where they can go to relax, receive counselling, complementary therapies and more.
The Centre, staffed by healthcare professionals and trained volunteers, many with personal experience, currently receives around 11,500 visits per year. But with increased numbers of people being affected by cancer and surviving, it was felt that the centre needed to enlarge if it were to help more patients.
Sue Smith, Manager of The Mustard Tree Centre said; “We are so grateful to Macmillan Cancer Support for funding this project, along with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. The new space will mean that we will be able to offer many more appointments and help us provide more essential support for patients and their families. During the building works, we will need to be able to function with the minimum of disruption to patients and their families. We therefore look forward to working closely with KMS Contract Building Services who have extensive experience working in the healthcare sector and will be sensitive to the needs of the service .”
Managing Director of KMS (Contract Building Services) Ltd Kevin Smith said; “We pride ourselves on delivering an 1 st class service on complex projects, and are delighted to be working with Macmillan at The Mustard Tree to improve their patient care.”
He added; “During a time when many construction companies are feeling the effects of the economic downturn we are continuing to grow and expand, creating a defined niche as specialists for working in controlled environments. We are delighted to have won another contract with The Plymouth NHS Trust after our recent success winning the contract to extend and re-furbish Derriford’s A&E Department.”
Work on the project began at the beginning of February with completion scheduled for October 2009.
